On the night of halloween, fans, artists, and collaborators of the recently deceased Mac Miller gathered for a tribute concert honoring the late rapper. Over the past month since his passing, fans have flocked to the internet to express their grief- which has seemed accurately fitting considering his role as a new wave artist: he represented a generation that was growing up online. With his initial music releases being spread through social media and streaming websites, the artist grew his platform and fanbase in a way that was geniune, authentic, and spirited.
The crowd, who was originally there to see Miller’s scheduled concert for his latest album release, filled Los Angeles’s Greek Theatre, a 5,800 capacity amphitheatre that sits inside one of Los Angeles’s largest urban parks, Griffith Park. Artists like Ty Dolla $ign, Vince Staples, Rae Sremmurd and Travis Scott danced and crowd surfed, using their bodies to radiate celebration, while SZA, Chance The Rapper, Anderson Paak, and Schoolboy Q’s performances were sentimental, sprinkled with moments of heartfelt testimony.
Artists from all over sent in videos expressing their emotions towards the loss as well. “You were a really necessary and intelligent light,” shared Donald Glover. “Why would you leave me? We had a system going, man,” Pusha T joked reflecting on their relationship as workout buddies. “Man, I’ve been thinking about you lot. Like, almost every day. Does that mean I love you?” Jason Sudeikis asked in another clip.
