Missy Elliott First Female Hip-Hop Artist Inducted Into The Songwriters Hall Of Fame

Missy Elliott, the five-time Grammy Award-winning rapper, songwriter and producer, is making history as the first female hip-hop artist to be inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame. Elliott has been a dominating force in hip-hop for three decades, delivering classics such as “Get Ur Freak On,” “Work It” and “Lose Control.” Behind the scenes, she has contributed her songwriting skills to a number of iconic musicians, including Whitney Houston, Beyoncé, Mary J. Blige and Janet Jackson, among many others. Elliott is the third rapper to be inducted, joining Jermaine Dupri and Jay-Z.

The Songwriters Hall of Fame described Elliott as “one of the most significant female artists in contemporary music history” and an “across-the-board cultural icon.” The Portsmouth, Virginia-native released her acclaimed debut solo album, Supa Dupa Fly, in 1997 — paving the way for a string of hit singles “The Rain (Supa Dupa Fly), “Sock It 2 Me,” “Hit Em Wit Da Hee” and “Beep Me 911.” In 1999, Elliott released her sophomore album, Da Real World, home to her first No. 1 U.S. R&B hit “Hot Boyz (Remix),” according to the Songwriters Hall of Fame.

In 2002, Elliott received her first Grammy award for “Best Rap Performance” for “Get Ur Freak On” — a track from her 2001 album, Miss E…So Addictive. “Work It,” the leading single from her fourth studio album, Under Construction, spent 10 weeks at No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 and received a Grammy award for Best Female Rap Solo Performance. Elliott’s sixth studio album, The Cookbook, was comprised of the Grammy-nominated single “We Run This” and the famous sing-along anthem “Lose Control,” the Songwriters Hall of Fame described.

Elliott is also the only female rapper to have all six studio albums go platinum.

Most recently, the rapper performed at the 2015 Super Bowl XLIX halftime show alongside headliner Katy Perry. She also appeared with other female artists for the all-star anthem, “This Is For My Girls,” as part of former First Lady Michelle Obama’s Let Girls Learn initiative and #62MillionGirls campaign, targeted toward raising awareness about the lack of education among girls around the world.

Elliott celebrated her historic achievement on Twitter, writing:

I want to CONGRATULATE all the AMAZING songwriters who have been inducted into the 2019 Song Writers Hall of Fame…also those who were nominated because their body of work is AMAZING. I AM SO HUMBLY GRATEFUL to now be inducted also. I [heart] you all #SHOF2019.”

According to the Songwriters Hall of Fame, songwriters can qualify for induction after writing a notable catalog of hit songs for a minimum of 20 years.

The induction event is scheduled for June 13 at the Marriott Marquis Hotel in New York City. Elliott will be inducted along with songwriters Dallas Austin, Tom T. Hall, John Prine, Jack Tempchin and Yusuf/Cat Stevens, into the 2019 class.

    Brockhampton’s 3 day NYC Takeover

Brockhampton, the boyband formed in 2015 back on a Kanye West fan forum, has spent the past 3 years proving why they’re the most talented new collective of our time. The group released their three installments of their Saturation series in the short time of one year, which gathered them an international fanbase eager to see their live performance.

The band spent the end of August/early September of this year living in Abbey Road, London to record their latest project, “Iridescence”. Kevin Abstract, the founder of the group, told BBC Radio, “We’re making iridescence right now at Abbey Road. We started from scratch and were like, ‘Let’s make an album in 10 days and put it out next month,’-the way we like to make music is we’ll announce a project when there are zero songs, and then we take that pressure and try to make an album really fast.”

And the pressure clearly paid off- the album debuted at number one on the Billboard 200, marking their first chart-topping project. Shortly after the release of the project, the group gave their hyped fanbase a wish come true, and they headed on their national tour.

In their 3 day stay at NYC, Brockhampton made sure that every person in one of the loudest cities in the world knew that they were there. With 3 packed shows at Terminal 5 and an appearance on Jimmy Fallon that landed them attention from Rolling Stone, the band is sure to attract even more attention throughout the remainder of their tour.

Off White Just Became the Hottest Brand in Fashion

When we think about the past few years of fashion, names such as Gucci and Balenciaga jump to the top of our heads with their stand out success in the market both through music mentions and street styles on artists- but according to Lyst’s quarterly ratings, both brands are no longer untouchable. Virgil Abloh, one of the most respected and prestigious designers in the industry, has brought Off-White to being both nominated for the Fashion Awards “Brand of the Year”, as well as being named Lyst’s “Hottest Fashion Brand in the World”.

And the title isn’t something that’s simply handed. The data collected to find the hottest fashion brand in the world is quite extensive and international. The survey, which is conducted every 3 months, analyses the shopping behaviors of over 5 million people internationally, looking at how they search, browse and what they actually buy across 12,000 designers and online stores. The formula takes into account Google search data, rates, and sales as well as, for the first time, looking at brand mentions and engagement statistics on social media. With Virgil Abloh’s insane rise from interning in 2009 at Fendi, to his latest collab preview with Louis Vuitton released earlier this week, we’re left to question- is it Virgil Abloh’s world and we’re just living in it?
