Well, it’s happening. Kanye West has announced, officially, that he will run for the office of President of the United States in the 2020 election. The rapper and media mogul made the official announcement on his social media on July 5 saying, “We must now realize the promise of America by trusting God, unifying our vision and building our future. I am running for president of the United States.”
Don’t forget he’s mentioned this idea numerous times before, most recently during an event this past November where Kanye expressed his desire for a 2024 campaign to the “delight” of the crowd. Now it seems the timeframe has moved up a bit.
Unfortunately for ‘Ye though, he’s already missed the deadline to file as an independent candidate in six states to be included on the ballot, leaving voters the only option of writing in his name when it comes time this November, depending on their state.
The last day to register in the states of North Carolina (March 3rd), Texas (May 11th), and New York (May 26th) have already come and gone, as well as in Maine (June 1st), New Mexico (June 25th) and Indiana (June 30th). There’s still time for him to register in South Carolina, Florida, Missouri, Colorado and Michigan though, where the deadlines in those states are not until the end of July.
As for a potential running mate, there have been no clues as of yet. We can probably rule out his friend and fellow musician John Legend though, who has had a political falling out with Kanye since publicly showing his support for the current president, Donald Trump. Legend said in an interview with the Times of London, “I don’t think we’re less friends because of the Trump thing. I just think we’re doing our own thing.”
We’ll just have to wait and see how this all plays out over the next few months. Best of luck, ‘Ye.
In the meantime, be sure to check out two brand new tracks that just dropped featuring the Chicago rapper: Travis Scott‘s “Wash Us In The Blood” below and a new collaboration with Ty Dolla $ign and Skrillex, titled “Ego Death.”
