Joe Biden wins Georgia, flipping the state for Democrats

Georgia has finished its first-ever statewide audit and hand recount of ballots for the presidential race, according to a news release from the Secretary of State’s office on Thursday night.

President-elect Joe Biden was officially called the winner over President Trump by 12,284 votes,  according to the results from the audit. This is a slight drop for Biden compared to the pre-audit results by nearly 1,300 votes.

The Associated Press was the first news organization to call Georgia for Biden on Nov. 7. A hand recount was ordered by state officials days later due to the razor-thin margin between the candidates. The counties of Douglas,  Fayette, Floyd, and Walton all reported issues with missing or uncounted ballots during the audit process. But nothing that drastically changed the overall outcome of the results.

Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensburger said the state will certify the  results on Friday. His office maintains their original statement saying there was no widespread fraud found during the audit. The final tally had Biden with 2,475,141 votes (49.5%) and Trump with 2,462,857 (49.3 %).

Raffensburger, a Republican, said earlier this week Trump could’ve won Georgia if it wasn’t for his own voter suppression. According to his count, 24,000 registered Republicans who voted in the states primary did not vote in the general election.

With Georgia’s 16 electoral votes, President-elect Biden is projected to have a total of 306 electoral votes to Trump’s 232. The former Vice President is the first Democrat to carry the Peachtree state in 28 years with Bill Clinton being the last to do so in the 1992 election.
