Spelling out that “words have consequences,” President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris gave emotional remarks in Atlanta on Friday following a deadly mass shooting incident there earlier this week.
Both Biden and Harris spoke out on recent hate crimes against Asian Americans and the attacks in Atlanta earlier this week. Local law enforcement has linked the Atlanta shootings to a “sex addiction,” however, many nationwide have condemned the deadly incidents as racially motivated.
A suspect is in custody for the shootings.
“Racism is real in America in America, and it always has been,” Vice President Harris began. “Xenophobia is real in America, and always has been.”
“Everyone has the right to walk down the street and be safe,” she continued. “And also, the right to be recognized as an American. Not as the other, not as ‘them,’ but as ‘us.’ A harm against any one of us is a harm against all of us.”

Beforehand, the president met with Asian American leaders in Atlanta early Friday, just days after a lone gunman killed eight people, six of whom were of Asian descent. He said their stories were “heart-wrenching to hear.”
Biden emphasized that “there are just some core values and beliefs that should bring us together as Americans.”
